Jytte
Lokvig, M.A. After graduating
from NEHS in 1956, I returned to Denmark to attend college.
Three years later I returned to the US with my family.
We settled in California. I
attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles for two years;
later married and had two sons, Troy and Kairand (b.Kevin) who have
since given me wonderful daughters-in-law and a total of six
grandchildren. My husband and I
participated in the Renaissance Pleasure Faire for five years starting
in 1966. In 1969 I opened a
boutique in Hollywood featuring my original designs.
It was the best of times, with fashions full of fun and romance
– and the worst of times, with vigils at the shop, praying that Bobby
Kennedy would live and mourning when Martin Luther King died.
My customers gave rock concerts, made movies and marched in
antiwar demonstrations. I
designed magical wedding gowns and costumes for entertainers, band and
movies (--the marchers were on their own.) In between I’ve
been in and out of the theater, television and movies.
In addition to working on costuming, I had supporting speaking
roles in a couple of Hollywood movies
and parts in a few stage performances.
I’ve also produced several videos on artists for cable TV. I divorced in the
mid-seventies and went back to school at Antioch College/West, UCLA, and
CSULA. With degrees in art
and education, I became one of the founding staff members of the
nation’s first publicly financed alternative school in the country,
which since became the model for the current magnet and charter schools. After teaching for 7 years I returned to my art, showing in
galleries and group shows. 1978-88
I was active with a national arts-organization, the Women’s Caucus for
Art, organizing numerous exhibitions and serving as president in
1985-86. In 1988 I became
the producer and host of a Southern California cable television
interview show. During most of that time I lived in a loft in downtown L.A.
To this day, my favorite domicile, it was a big open space with
high ceilings and a large deck overlooking the street scene. I left Southern
California in 1988 and have been living with my animals and computers on
a mountainside southeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For the past dozen
years I’ve worked with the elderly, especially those with
Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.
I coach families and professionals on care giving and
communication and design life-enrichment programs and activities for
Alzheimer’s facilities. In 2002 I published Alzheimer’s
A to Z, Secrets to Successful Caregiving.
It was very well receiving and acknowledged as a uniquely
effective guide to caregivers. New
Harbinger Publications has published a revised and updated version under
the title of Alzheimer’s A to Z, A Quick Reference Guide. Wish I could have
been there with you. Love Aka JO
